Recently, someone had written an article about what the city of Madras, now called Chennai, means to him. You should read the article even if you haven’t heard of the city. It is really well-written. It is also indicative of how a chrysanthemum is not a chrysanthemum is not a chrysanthemum. Not everyone can associate Madras with filter coffee and Carnatic music. It’s the disquieting charm of the city; that its lack of a separate identity that affords us to have different experiences in it.

Even as children, many grew up in the same neighbourhood but remained uninfluenced by each other’s culinary interests, clothing preferences and tastes in music. So, here are 13 reasons why Madras wasn’t just about the filter coffee.
